Next on stage are a band who have been on the scene for a few years now, LostAlone. I recall seeing these guys at the 2007 edition of Download Festival, kicking proceedings off on the third stage that year. This coupled with the fact that InMe will be supporting them on their European tour in April, gives me a sense of anticipation ahead of their set tonight. This sense grows as the band take to the stage to the sound of Richard Burton and 'The Eve Of The War' from The War Of The Worlds. It is perhaps this sense of anticipation that leaves me feeling a little under whelmed as their short set continues. Don't get me wrong, I've seen worse, a lot worse in fact, but to me the band from Derbyshire appear average on this evening of fine rock.
Tonight Essex rockers, InMe, led by front man Dave McPherson play at a half full Waterfront venue in Norwich. If we rewind back to 2001, InMe videos were all over television channels, such as Kerrang. They had just released debut album 'Overgrown Eden', which peaked at number 1 in the UK Rock Albums Chart, and number 15 in the UK Albums Chart. In short, InMe were built up as the next big thing. In support of 'Overgrown Eden', they released four singles, 'Underdose', 'Firefly', 'Neptune' and 'Crushed Like Fruit', the latter reaching number 25 in the UK Singles Chart.
In the years that have followed, InMe have released a further four albums ('White Butterfly', 'Daydream Anonymous', 'Herald Moth' and 'The Pride') but have failed to capitalise on their earlier success. Album number two, 'White Butterfly', having the most success, yet only reaching number 56 in the UK Albums Chart. In 2003, the band played an early evening set on the main stage at Download Festival. But following front man McPherson's battle with alopecia, InMe had a seemingly self imposed exile from the mainstream UK festival scene up until 2009.
I take you now to 2009, and InMe played their first mainstream UK festival in a number of years at Sonisphere Festival. At the Knebworth event, InMe played a short set in the Strongbow Bar Tent. This appearance is such a success, that they are invited back the very next year. This time they play in the much larger, Bohemia Tent, and the crowd spilled out of the 5,000 capacity tent.
Now InMe are back with a brand new album, their fifth effort entitled 'The Pride'. In support of this album, InMe have announced a mammoth 35 date tour of the UK and Ireland. This brings us back to tonight and The Waterfront in Norwich. Tonight is the thirteenth date of their massive tour and InMe are fully in the swing of things.
InMe open the show tonight with the opening track from 'The Pride', 'Reverie Shores', before dropping 'Soldier' and the epic 'Faster The Chase'. McPherson is in jovial mood tonight, despite the fact he has hurt his back. In 2006, McPherson's brother Greg replaced the departed Joe Morgan on bass guitar, and the brothers clearly enjoy being on stage together. Greg even helping his older brother, by fetching beer for him. The current line-up is completed by drummer Simon Taylor and relative new boy Gazz Marlow on guitar.
The band push on with their career spanning set with 'Belief Revival', 'Saccharine Arcadia', 'A Great Man' and 'Cracking The Whip'. New album 'The Pride' takes centre stage in the set list tonight, which unfortunately leaves little room for the singles taken from debut 'Overgrown Eden'. They do dip their toes into that album next however, with hidden gem of the night 'Natural'.
'The Pride's 'Pantheon' and 'White Butterfly' single, '7 Weeks' follow, before another new song 'Moonlit Seabed'. The older McPherson, who is very interactive with the crowd tonight, then informs us that the next song 'Her Mask' is our "pretend, last song of the night". He explains that they won't waste valuable stage time, by wasting time backstage, and the set will continue.
For our pretend encore, InMe play 'Raindrops On Stones', the emotional 'Legacy' and 'Herald Moth' offering 'Ferocity In Desire'. We end a very good evening of rock music with the obligatory 'Underdose'. InMe proved to me tonight that they still have it, as far as the live shows go. And with latest album 'The Pride' entering the midweek charts at number 26 before charting at a post 2005 best of number 60, perhaps there is life in this old dog yet!
