There is no support tonight which is a little gutting as the band have in the past brought with them porn (Men Of) and Big Business, two awesome bands who are as worthy as watching as the main band themselves. OK they both feature current Melvins members; Dale Crover, Jared Warren and Coady Willis, but still
We are promised 100 minutes of sheer Melvins, and that's what we get. From the ear bleeding beginning (I regretted not putting in ear plugs sooner, especially right next to the gigantic speakers and their gut punching soundwaves) to the smoother and more chilled out ending this show was fantastic for all there. Warren and Melvin's hugely haired singer Buzz Osborne takes on most of the vocal duties but booming Warren also shares some. King Buzzo's clear guitar is a beauty in itself too.
The setlist does not just focus on their latest release (last year's 'The Bride Screamed Murder') but takes a handful of songs from most albums on their seemingly endless discography, only missing a few albums between 2000 2004 and their oldest albums from 1987 and 1989 (plus a couple in between). When introducing the punky 'Up The Dumper' they can't even remember which album it's from!
The crowd love the huge dynamic of sounds from the Melvins, the aforementioned punk, growling grunge, deep metal and everything in between. Add to that vocal effects from Buzz, odd vocal noises and synth melodies from Crover and astounding single and double drum solos from Crover and Willis, you have a winner of a gig. Not to mention the highlight of the roman warrior style costumes from Crover and Warren.
