Revival Tour 2011 featuring Brian Fallon, Dan Andriano, Chuck Ragan, Dave Hause and friends

Rock City, Nottingham on Sun 2nd Oct 2011

Pulled together by Hot Water Music's Chuck Ragan, this event basically brings together musician friends playing acoustic songs in a collaborative project. Some are stripped back covers of their own tunes, each others tunes, other people's tunes, but all the time keeping the harsh sound of punk vocals over the sound of the quieter acoustic instruments. And it's all about playing music with your mates and having a great time, and this thinking shines through during this show.

The names involved are some of the biggest in the punk rock scene; Gaslight Anthem's Brian Fallon, Alkaline Trio's Dan Andriano, and Chuck and The Loved Ones Dave Hause. The plan is they play together all at once of just a few at a time, solo and with help from some very accomplished musicians, the absolutely stunning fiddle work of Jon Gaunt, and extreme double bass playing from Joe Ginsberg.

Turning up slightly late and having to queue forever to get in, we miss the first collaboration featuring all the artists. Dave Hause is the first guy back up on stage to play solo and with a little help from his friends. There's a couple of Loved One's covers with 'Jane' and 'Pretty Good Year', and Chuck comes by to help with 'C'mon Kid', then Dave plays my favourite HWM song 'Trusty Chords', thanks HWM member Chris Wollard for writing it, and chuck comes in to add his gruff vocals.

Chuck Ragan takes to the stage next to thank everyone for backing this project, and allowing them to strip it back and bring a more personal show to the crowd. With many of the members here having taken a wee break and releasing solo albums it is a way to plug them but in a marvellous way. How often do these punk heavyweights get together? Rarely we are told, which makes it all the more special. Chuck is mainly playing songs from new solo album 'Covering Ground', which has contributions from Brian, Frank Turner and Blind Melon's Chris Thorn to name a few. Chuck hands the mike over to Leeds guy Jimmy Islip, who leads them in a cover of The Pogues' 'Dirty Ol' Town' followed by his own tune '1990'. Then it's back to Chuck for more solo tracks and Brian's help on 'Meet You In the Middle'.

Revival Tour

Next up is Alkaline Trio's Dan Andriano. There are chances to sing-along to the Trio covers 'Every Thug Needs A Lady', 'Blue Carolina', 'Emma' and 'Crawl'. Other tracks are from Dan's solo album 'Hurricane Season', like this the title track (that Chuck helps out with) and 'From This Oil Can'.

Revival Tour

Brian Fallon gets a huge cheer from the crowd, but I believe all the artists here are legends. He mainly plays Gaslight Anthem covers stripped bare, after covering Patty Griffin's 'Long Ride Home' with Dave. It is a mainly solo set too, with a little help guitarist Ian Perkins, who is in the band The Horrible Crowes, Fallon's latest side project and where the other tunes like 'Ladykiller' come from. Ian we are told also came up with the beautiful riff to their song 'Cherry Blossom'. Brian gets really angry with some people in the pit for talking through his songs, kind of annoying but it all depends if they are ruining it for other people there, so he had a right go at them and created a huge cheer. This is at acoustic levels I guess…

Revival Tour

Then everyone takes to the stage again for more songs, including The Gaslight Anthem's '59 Sound', The Loved Ones 'Resolution' and Chuck's song 'Californian Burritos'. The show finishes with everyone onstage singing 'Revival Road'.

Revival Tour

What makes this show extra special is that the music is non stop, there are no breaks between sets, just people taking their turn and helping out on other tunes. The only break is for the encore for a couple of minutes. Dave Hause seems to love running on stage to help out and is having a right laugh, climbing off the speakers and rallying the crowd. Indeed everyone is having a laugh on stage, and this really shows the strength of this brotherhood of musicians and their passion for this tour. There's even a point where the mischievous Dave recruits Brian to come and play limes on a bottle of whiskey towards the end of the night. Chuck really has a great idea here and I can’t wait for the next one.
