Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly. / Keith / Dartz

Cockpit, Leeds on Wed 11th Oct 2006

I completely missed Dartz; slack I know. I did get stopped at the door though, where I was stood queuing with none other that Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly (aka Sam Duckworth, if you’ve had your head up your bottom for the last year and didn’t know). After packing out quite a large tent at the Leeds Festival, and playing to a lucky Ebay bidder outside his tent at the same event, this lad is down to earth and deserves the success that is hurtling towards him. I’ve heard stories of him travelling on a megabus for 5 hours just to play a small gig somewhere, back in the day. And here he is, on the verge of a massive breakthrough and queuing with the rest of us nobodies outside. Hats off to the lad.

I did get to see Keith, tipped as one of Manchester’s hottest bands. A distinctive voice covers the indie / dub / groove played by these highly talented boys, complete with vocal samples stuttering over the top. They have a steady fan base in this evening, mainly young folk. Singer Oli Bayston has two microphones, and spends the set tinkering on the keyboard or playing bongos, and generally getting about a bit on stage.

Keith

With a name to fend off any pigeonholing, and a bugger to explain to the older generation (“You saw who, dear?”), Southend’s GWWCF (I’m not typing this up twenty times, life’s too short) appears on a bare stage. Only a few mics, a drum kit tucked away stage left and a Mac laptop adorn the small area. The drummer is present most of the time, and a cornet player joins in now and again. The main sound comes from Sam’s acoustic guitar and great voice, an emo/folk style, if you will.

Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly

A few attendees have put the effort in, and a couple of banners fly about. The superman capes are the best! Songs like ‘One More With Feeling’, ‘An Oak Tree’, ‘Children are the Consumers’ and tracks from new album ‘Chronicles of a Bohemian Teenager’ and a Steve Miller Band cover (‘Abracadabra’) are taken in well by the crowd of mainly young people, mind you the man himself is but a boy (aww, he’s only 20!).

Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly

The soft guitar melodies, Mac-concocted electronic drum beats and clever lyrics along with meaningful political statements make a nice change to the constant cloning of some acoustic performers. Add to the Sam’s enthusiasm for what he does and his music and you have a winner on your hands. Many already know it, how about you?
