I did get to see Keith, tipped as one of Manchesters hottest bands. A distinctive voice covers the indie / dub / groove played by these highly talented boys, complete with vocal samples stuttering over the top. They have a steady fan base in this evening, mainly young folk. Singer Oli Bayston has two microphones, and spends the set tinkering on the keyboard or playing bongos, and generally getting about a bit on stage.
With a name to fend off any pigeonholing, and a bugger to explain to the older generation (You saw who, dear?), Southends GWWCF (Im not typing this up twenty times, lifes too short) appears on a bare stage. Only a few mics, a drum kit tucked away stage left and a Mac laptop adorn the small area. The drummer is present most of the time, and a cornet player joins in now and again. The main sound comes from Sams acoustic guitar and great voice, an emo/folk style, if you will.
A few attendees have put the effort in, and a couple of banners fly about. The superman capes are the best! Songs like One More With Feeling, An Oak Tree, Children are the Consumers and tracks from new album Chronicles of a Bohemian Teenager and a Steve Miller Band cover (Abracadabra) are taken in well by the crowd of mainly young people, mind you the man himself is but a boy (aww, hes only 20!).
The soft guitar melodies, Mac-concocted electronic drum beats and clever lyrics along with meaningful political statements make a nice change to the constant cloning of some acoustic performers. Add to the Sams enthusiasm for what he does and his music and you have a winner on your hands. Many already know it, how about you?
