The Baddies from Barnsley played some good rock and roll. They are very talented musicians who, though new as The Baddies, come from a variety of different backgrounds in music (The Dysfunctionals, Sunlounger). There was however hardly anyone there to witness their show, but they have time to wow yet.
The first stars from Wakey to play tonight are indie-rock band Pylon. They have influences of The Lemonheads amongst others and their harmonised vocals flowing over a sound varying from overly distorted to sweet guitar melodies, topped off with the electric piano twinklings. Hard to pigeonhole, but they have a good following in Wakefield, helped by the fact that the members come from worthy bands as Chopper, Nathaniel Green and Two Man Cupie. After two successful CDs watch out for the debut full length album, being mixed by the masters who worked on albums from Sonic Youh, Run DMC and Fatboy Slim, to name but a few.
Keeping with the Wakey lads its the turn of Milloy, the power-pop-punk quintet with a healthy fan base in West Yorkshire. Having taken Florida by storm last year the band can and will make it big, just no one knows when, not even themselves. Mainly leaving the old EP tracks in the shadows tonight they focus on the harsher sound of the debut album More Than A Machine, an in-yer-face head nodding set of tunes.
And last tonight it was time to take it to the heavy side with metal-ers Djingo. The Leeds lads looked more punk than your stereotypical heavy metal band, but seemed to be having the time of their lives. It was however their last gig, but the brilliant acoustics in the small room of the Cockpit ensured their sound will last with their fans. Still a small crowd but that makes the gig more memorable for some, and it was easier to part the crowd (imagine like the red sea) when a quite large member of the band wanted to mosh.
