Interpol

Rock City, Nottingham on Sun 19th Dec 2004

Secret Machine and Interpol.

On a frosty December night The Secret Machine warmed up the eager capacity Rock City crowd with an attention-grabbing set full of pounding drums and droning guitar - a band to watch for sure. We were ready for Interpol.

Interpol

The buzz of anticipation increased in the crowd, manoeuvring for a good position from which to see the New Yorkers, we settled and waited. Interpol finally emerged swathed in dry ice and blue light that reflected the weather conditions outside - Paul Banks taking centre stage – they opened slow and moody with songs from the new album ‘Antics’ before raising the tempo - quirky bass lines from Carlos D combined with Daniel Kessler’s strident guitaring with a tightness you’d expect and hope for from a tour finale.

Interpol

After several tracks from the new album the tempo slowed once more for the haunting Turn on the Bright Lights, full of smoke and atmosphere, Paul Banks voice dominating the sound. The songs came thick and fast with little pause for breath, a mixture of new & old, each greeted by an enthusiastic crowd. Only one hour in and the band were leaving the stage for the end of the set - but at least we got two encores. The first (I forget the song) ended with suitable thank you’s for a last-of-tour show and then they returned once more and played the wonderful, hard hitting ‘PDA’. The band exited leaving guitar feedback reverberating around rock city along with rapturous applause. Set-lists were grabbed and drumsticks rained down - Interpol were gone, all too soon.
