Belle and Sebastian

City Hall, Sheffield on Tue 2nd Dec 2003

You never know what to expect with Belle and Sebastian: some nights they can be really great and other nights quite dull. Luckily on this tour we managed to pick a good night.

For those of you have never heard Belle and Sebastian, their music is a hybrid of infectious sixties orchestral pop mixed with a bit of seventies bubblegum. They gently glide through their set, which consisted of quite a few tracks from 'Dear Catastrophe waitress', all of which went down well with the audience, especially 'Step into my office, baby'.

They asked the audience to shout out a song that they would like to hear, some bright spark suggesting 'Don't you want me' by The Human League. So two people volunteered to come up onstage and sing it, rather amusing to say the least.

Belle and Sebastian made sure that they played tracks from every album. Great live, their music sometimes just reminds me way too much of bands like the Beatles; not a bad thing, but not too original either.
