Friday night in Birmingham was an extraordinary night indeed. (Read on)
The wonderful LeAnn Rimes was in town. I had seen her before eons ago at a Royal variety performance and she blew me away then, so I was wondering what tonight was gonna bring.
Looking amazing in a black and white ensemble, high waisted black flarey trousers, with black braces and a white low cut blouse. She looked absolutely stunning and a picture of health.
The first few bars of the very first song sounded around Symphony Hall and you could have heard a pin drop, very goosepimply moment, ‘Love Line’ was very eerie indeed with no musical accompaniment whatsoever and it was a moment I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
Over the duration of the show her vocals were effortless, powerful and on point, she was astounding, so versatile. She is up there with some of the best female vocalists and well worth seeing on tour.
We were treated to quite a bit of chat between numbers, Leanne explaining about some of the tracks and where the new album came from and her support for the LBGT Community, which drew a big cheer from the audience (including me!).
The title track from her current offering ‘Remnants’, which was mind blowing, followed up by one of the gems of the night ‘Outrageous Love’.
21 years in the music business, such longevity in this business is astounding and Rimes is no exception, she’s a little pocket rocket with such vocal versatility, it blew me out of my seat., stand out moments for me tonight were ‘Blue’, which was first recorded when she was 11 and her first US Number 1 ‘One Way Ticket’, which had a bit of a mix of Tracy Chapmans ‘Fast car’, which was totally exceptional.
A touching moment through the set was her beautiful rendition of ‘Mother’, again a goosepimply moment with tears this time, I heard a few cries and whimpers in the audience throughout the song. Only accompanied by piano and it was totally mind blowing, one of those moments you never wanna miss.
We were treated to a medley of all the duets Ms Rimes has done over the years including Elton John, Ronan Keating and David Gray, a complete mash up, this is when you realise how long she’s been around.
A reworked version of ‘How do I live without you', which was epic and the song I and probably everyone else wanted to hear, it didn’t disappoint. Followed up by ‘Can’t Fight the Moonlight’, I was so glad when this came on as my wife kept saying when’s the bar song coming on, and here we are, one happy wife.
Remnants is an album about love from many angles, Rimes said it was very husband inspired. I think she was missing him as he was mentioned quite a few times throughout the set.
The last three songs the audience were on their feet, the I’s were dotted and t’s crossed with an amazing rendition of ‘I’m Every Woman’ and ‘Hallelujah’.
Tonight’s show was absolutely exceptional; one of those artists that should be on your bucket list to see and by gosh LeAnn Rimes has definitely been ticked off my list.
This women is one of the music biz’s hidden gems and if you do one thing for yourself, go and see her you won’t be disappointed.
