After travelling around to catch the few times Kerbdog have been over to the UK (even going to Dublin in 2008) I and many others were chuffed when they announced a tour for this Autumn. And at the Brudenell Social Club no less, one of the finest venues in the North East.
The running order has been swapped around so I am glad I raced through to watch all of Hey You Guys set, as they were a right laugh. The singer has lost his voice a little so was holding up cardboard signs, which were hard to read in the light but we did see the ones that said "Cheer" and "We will try not to be shit". Songs like 'Supermarket' are indeed not shit. The band are comical buggers and very engaging, and me and many others thoroughly enjoyed their set. Some of us even got pounced on.
Narcs I feel should have played first, as they stood out as a more serious band. A very tight and very proficient band, but I found them a little boring after the carnage that was HYG, and was now getting too excited for Kerbdog, to pay too much attention.
The lads are on next and there's a real buzz in the old working men's club. The average age may be 38 but there is still to be a moshpit to put youngsters to shame! There's a man down front who is recognized with a beard who when asked about said beard said he has seen the band multiple times, but then singer Cormac Battle answers "but it can't be the same beard, they grow and ya know!", and hats off to the guy who shouted "Trigger's Broom!" Top marks though go to the guy at the end who got his forehead signed with permanent marker…
You can tell there's a lot of people who have waited for this gig for a long time, the energy released is huge! The band are having a right old time too, laughing and joking and repeatedly saying "We are Kerbdog" much to our amusement. Battle does mix up the words a few times but that's part of the charm, these are 90's songs and played for nostalgia more than to compete with the X Factor shite of today.
There may be only two albums to pull material from but when they are two awesome albums what does it matter? The newest song 'Electricity' (or 'Soaking Wet' as it was known in 1997 as a demo) is sadly missing from the set, but 'Dummy Crusher' is here as Hey You Guys' Dave Draper steps up again on guitar (he did this the last time Kerbdog visited, and he also recorded the latest live album 'Congregation') leaving Battle to bounce around while Billy Dalton shreds, Darragh Butler pounds them drums and Colin Fennelly keeps the bassline to a T. Due to the different nature of the two albums (the self-titled album was very heavy, whereas there was more melody to 'On The Turn'. The latter was the most popular, but I have a special place in my heart for 'Kerbdog' and songs like 'End Of Green' and 'Dry Riser') you can see fans here have their favourite side, but there's plenty like me who sing along to all the tracks.
It's a fun old time to be had and people loved every minute of it. Lets hope the lads can come back and tour more often, because this is proof good times come and go in the blink of an eye, and Kerbdog always give an excellent live show.
