Imagine Dragons

O2 Academy, Birmingham on Fri 22nd Nov 2013

Another freezing cold night in Birmingham, did I wanna come out of my lovely warm house and from under the duvet on the couch to go to yet another gig – OF COURSE I BLOODY WELL DID, it was Imagine Dragons.

It was curfew tonight so the bands were on early, we missed both supports as 'Dragons were due to be on at 8.30, we got there just in time for me to have a gander at the merchandise, which was a bit extortionate, £25 for a T-shirt, but I bought one anyways (chuckled to myself).

Imagine Dragons

I waited for the band to come on and then noticed that the audience was full to the rafters of prepubescent teenagers, it looked like they'd all come from school to go straight to the venue to get to the front. I thought I'd made a mistake and gone to a 1D gig as there were just so many kids, and with parents in tow.

A no frills stage set with loads of drums, I know from previous experience Dragons love drums and tonight was no exception, they came on to an introduction jam packed with drums, it whipped the crowd up into a frenzy and set the precedent for the rest of the show.

Whilst in the pit snapping away, I noticed the decibel level had increased somewhat, I knew it was a teen show cause the kids knew every single word of every single song, talk about the oldest swingers in the venue, I was old enough to be there Mum?! Is this good, who knows?

The set kicked off with 'Round and Round' and one of my album favourites 'Amsterdam', the kids were in awe, it made perfect sense for the lead singer, Dan to stand on kit boxes which had been laid out in front of the stage so he could lean over and be closer to the audience, hands stretched and shouts of undying love throughout the night.

Every song you could hear the kids dulcet tones with every word echoing from their lips. We even had moshing and the amount of phones taking videos and photos was astounding.

The atmosphere was absolutely electric tonight and the Dragons thrived on it, Dan kept going on about how it had taken them five years to get here and they had started playing sweaty clubs to 20/30 people, he thanked everyone for coming and making it a special night.

A 90 minute set went so quick, there were highs, obviously Dragons anthem 'Radioactive', and 'Song 2' which was absolutely stonking and mind blowingly brilliant, I was totally in ore.

'30 Lives', 'Demons' and 'Underdog' went down a storm but as soon as 'On Top Of The World' came on the whole place erupted, it would've blew the roof of the venue. The show had stepped up another gear totally, more moshing and even a mosh ring in the middle of the audience, I was wishing I was twenty again so I could join in and give as good as I got, but the balcony would have to suffice tonight.

14 songs of pure brilliance I can understand why the 'Dragons have such a following. I have seen so many gigs this year and this ranks in the top five for atmosphere and entertainment, I totally loved it.

The shocking thing is my 13 year old nephew spoke to me on Sunday and asked me about Imagine Dragons, I said how on earth do you know them? The reply, one of their songs is on FIFA and I like a couple of their other songs, I was seriously astounded at what good taste he has in music already.

What a night, do yourself a favour and go and see this band live, you seriously won't be disappointed.
