The Joy Formidable

LG Arena, Birmingham on Tue 30th Oct 2012

There aren't many opportunities to see one of your favourite bands supporting at such an amazing venue. When the opportunity arose to see The Joy Formidable at the LG Arena I jumped at it.

Muse had announced 'Joy' as their support for a few of the UK dates, I was astounded that Muse would choose 'Joy' but hey, really happy to be seeing one of my favourite bands.

I wanted to see if 'Joy' could make the transition from a 'big band' in a small venue to a 'big band' in a large venue. Previously I'd seen 'Joy' at a small venue in Leicester and I ended up being deaf for the trip home.

Having such a superstar fan of Dave Grohl from the Foo's speaks volumes., when I've seen the band before I've come away totally buzzing and amazed at their prowess on stage.

Tonight wasn't without it's dramas, waiting 40mins for a photo pass and then being rescued by the record company (Thanks Harriet) and 'Joy's' tour manager, finally got to the pit 15mins before the band came on stage.

The Joy Formidable

The arena was about 3/4's full when the band came on stage at 7.30, I had been waiting all day for this, actually for a few weeks if I told the truth (lol). Ritzy was dressed in a black and white dress, Black Country dude, Matt on Drums, was all smart in a waistcoat, short, tie and jeans, Rhydian again all casual.

The set was a rip roaring one and left me wanting more and more., the sound was a whirlwind of power and the speakers at the LG blasted to space and back.

Showcasing tracks for 'The Big Roar', which is an amazing album, 45 minutes of pure gold, my ears were loving it, hearing comments like "oh, my god they're amazing", And "They're way better than Muse" just about sums it up for me.

'The Everchanging Spectrum of a Lie' was superb live, 'Austere' was amazing and got all the crowd's attention, I couldn't help myself by singing along and clapping. Quality tuneage of 'A Heavy Abacus' took my breath away, totally loved it, 'Whirring' was another little Gem and showed what a quality band 'Joy' are. The band gel together so well, they seemed comfortable on the stage, and the music carried throughout the arena like a hot knife through butter.

Song of the night for me was new single 'Cholla' what an absolute stonker, if this is anything to judge the new album by, then, bring it on and quick smart too.

At the end of the set it was like a big party with Ritzy smashing her guitar to pieces and Matt decided to climb and jump all over his drum kit. Totally rock and roll!

I went away from this gig wishing it was February 2013 and I had a copy of the album in my sweaty mits. One of my must see bands if ever they tour!!

I am waiting for the release of the new Joy Formidable album 'Wolf's Law' in the new year, tour dates have already been announced for next February and March in anticipation of the album.

Seriously you need this band in your life, buy the album I can assure you it will whet your appetite for more and you'll definitely wanna see them live for sure.
