Dillinger Four / Leatherface / The Magnificent

Brudenell Social Club, Leeds on Thu 17th Dec 2009

This is the second of two nights of pure punk and rock bliss at the Brudenell Social in Leeds, a tucked away but friendly venue with cheap drinks and a good layout (apart from the odd compulsory ceiling pillar). Tonight's show is sold out, as is the quality of the line up. Local lads The Magnificent are second on the bill (unfortunately I miss the first band, Offshore Radio, because of the increasing snow patterns outside). This Leeds band featuring members of Buzzkill and That Fucking Tank (amongst others) play songs reminiscent of early pop-punk era Green Day with gruff Rancid style vocals. 'It's Not Enough' and 'Search Party' are great pop punk tunes from album 'Pay The Crimes' about girls and drinking; just like the nineties pop punk then.

The Magnificent

They are joined onstage by Rob Taylor (Nathaniel Green) to play electronic organ for 'Citizen X', a rancid style belter with a contagious chorus. The guys switch vocal duties so the variation in vocal styles is interesting to hear too, though Matt Colmer and Jimmy Islip can both be called gruff.

Next up punk rock pappy Leatherface take to the stage for the first time in a while in Leeds. Frankie Stubbs' raspy drawl makes the band sound a little like Motorhead, but the music sounds more like Husker Du and Hot Water Music, who site Leatherface as a huge influence. There is a slight glitch when random music starts playing over the speakers whilst the band are mid song, but apart from that it is a perfect set.

Leatherface

There are a couple of songs from the bands huge album 'Mush', namely 'I Want the Moon' and 'Dead Industrial Atmosphere' as the set ender. There are also many single releases included too ('Little White God', 'Not Superstitious' – the song of the night) and songs from mixed compilations ('Springtime' and 'Hoodlum') so you can be assured the crowd were very animated. An excellent set from a UK punk legend.

Dillinger Four are a funny, jolly band, like a band of Santas (apt for this time of year). They take to the stage and declare that this show may be legendary; as they have to drive to London and get a flight home (the snow is quite heavy). They are "the Buddy Holly's of the decade!"

Dillinger Four

You can tell by just reading the titles of the songs that these are a comedy band, like NOFX in a way. 'Mosh For Jesus', 'Maximum Piss And Vinegar' and 'Super Powers Enable Me To Blend In With Machinery' should alert you to the ginormity of the giggling caused by these four from Minneapolis.

Although the latest album 'Civil War' shows a sense of maturity with more political lyrics, the band do not come across any less immature on stage. Big men bouncing around to pop punk, I love it!

Fuelled on whiskey (hence the song 'DoubleWhiskeyCokeNoIce') the band have a reputation for a drunken show, but tonight they are not too rebellious. Even if you do not know much about the band their comedic delivery, humorous songs and the odd bit of nudity (well, showing of body hair) will keep everyone entertained.

The mounting snow means I have to leave early to get my car out of the un-gritted car park and 15 miles home; I hope the guys get home for Christmas and don't do a Patsy Cline!
