2manydjs

O2 Academy, Glasgow on Sat 29th Aug 2009

Following on from being hyped to the max at T in the Park this year, 2manydjs continue their success with their tour showcasing in O2's Academy in Glasgow. Known for their mash-ups and commercial remixes, they appeal to the dance music hardcore scene, and to the chart and disco loving fans also.

Arriving at the O2 Academy, I'm greeted by an incredibly long queue. And with the recent downpour in the city, it wasn't the most pleasant, nor warm, wait. However, upon entering an incredibly full Academy, the humid heat quickly warmed the cool and damp audience. Unfortunately it was a short lived comfort zone for the audience, as the 2manydjs gig descended into 2manypeople creating a stifling and stuffy atmosphere filled with anticipation for the coming evening.

House DJs were there to warm the audience, and a good thing too since 2manydjs weren't playing until 1.30am (with doors having opened at 10pm) with the bars being particularly mobbed and under-staffed. Needless to say, the crowd were hyper and relieved when the Belgian duo, David and Stephen Dewaele arrived on stage, stood upon a mammoth box of decks to mix their magic and framed by a giant LCD screen providing them with their eye-catching visual backdrop.

The 90 minute long set contained all of the old favourites; a bit of Dolly's '9-5', some Daft Punk 'Robot Rocking' and with most gigs of the past few months, an homage to Michael Jackson inevitably appeared – all mixed with a heavy beat to up the tempo.

Undoubtedly, most of the crowd were awed with the performance, but perhaps these were the ones who hadn't seen the shorter set at one of the summer's festivals. In fact, the summer set could just as well be called 'The Best Of' since the longer performance seemed filled with unknown mash-ups and seemed there to only fill the time.

One of the highlights of the performance, was actually the visuals playing behind the DJ's – some very clever animation nicely emphasised for a perhaps unaware audience of who’s song was playing, who it was mashed with and then some clever animation scenes involving the two.

It did feel overall a bit disappointing – and considering their success over the festival period I had been expecting more fireworks from the duo. It would seem that once a group like 2manydjs get so high, it's difficult to top it.
