Either way, the weather is kind enough to break into blue skies and sunshine just as the foursome take to the tiny stage and launch into a playthrough of the entire album, and as the drinks keep flowing the small crowd slowly but surely starts to warm up. For those not in the know, My Passion look like Aiden's slightly cooler cousins and sound not too dissimilar to Enter Shikari and Innerpartysystem thanks to their furious blend of punky screamo noise and ravey electro-beats. It's a style that will attract and repel in equal measure, but it's also extremely effective in a live format, and the Hertfordshire boys absolutely slay it from the outset.
Enigmatic frontman Laurence René has already honed his live persona into a manic but well-polished ball of energy, and is instantly likeable thanks to his occasionally silly yet genuinely humble crowd banter. The rest of the band are tight and sound surprisingly crisp on such a small PA system, and as they plough through future favourites like 'BooMan' and 'Thanks For Nothing' to increasing vocal support, it's difficult not to see them selling out serious venues in the very near future.
Given that there's an entire album's worth of material on display, the show flies by at a startling speed and seems over before its barely begun. The resulting atmosphere is still one of somewhat drunken optimism though, and the band chatting away to fans within minutes of the gig finishing firmly show how down to earth they are. They may look like a Tim Burton wet dream, but with an arsenal of frustratingly catchy tunes and an inevitably devoted fanbase at their feet, it's almost impossible not to imagine My Passion going supernova within the next two years. Love them. Hate them. You certainly won't ignore them.
