singer John Martyn dies, aged 60

Singer-songwriter and guitarist John Martyn has died at the age of 60.

A statement on his website today says, "With heavy heart and an unbearable sense of loss we must announce that John died this morning."

The folk, blues and funk artist had over a forty-year career released twenty studio albums, and was widely regarded as one of the most soulful and innovative singer-songwriters of his generation.

John Martyn was born Iain David McGeachy on 11th September 1948 in New Malden, Surrey, the only son of two light opera singers. John's parents separated and his early childhood was spent in Glasgow. He was appointed an OBE in the New Year Honours.

John Martyn was one of music's greats and will be sadly missed.
