Young Livers / Milloy / Git Some

There is much energy on stage for a Sunday night. Shame the energy is not passed onto the crowd tonight, many of whom seem to be feeling the effects of a 'busy' Saturday. My busy Saturday has meant a full day of work on Sunday, making me a little late for this early show. The bands started before 7pm, though it was listed as starting then, so I hope some people made it in to catch Pure Graft, The Amistad and Die Emergency.



We enter the chilled out venue to Git Some, a crazy band from Denver featuring an anarchic high pitched vocalist and some deep Black Flag tones with the tempo changes of Biffy. Some may think it's a mess; my sister did not look too amused, but for a fan of stuff like the Melvins and other crazy-ass shit I love this stuff. The dances that bearded singer Luke 'Luscious' Fairchild are pounding out on stage look immense; I am thinking of asking him for lessons. And then there's the drummer, playing in just his pants...

Milloy up next. After a hometown show in the frankly shite venue of the Escobar in Wakefield (it only holds 50 people, tops) most people have seen them already this weekend, and choose to stay in tonight. The venue is pretty empty, though last night it was rammed (Milloy's followers The Belly Crew, a number of fans who get their tops off for their shows and mosh about, are sadly missing tonight. I consider filling in for them, but on my own it would not look too good).



Drummer Brigga plays the first song in a crocodile hat, but he is obscured by dim lighting and of course the drum kit. New guitarist Ray is doing a fine job filling in for the now departed axe man Bedi, but has an unfortunate time when his amp fails, leaving singer Jim to take the piss out of the sound technician Trev, and this also causes them to lose a song or two from the set. Jim's comical statements keep the crowd amused as always though.

Never mind though, as it is soon rectified and the band get on with tracks from 'More Than A Machine', and new album 'Creating Problems While Practising Solutions', which go down well on the quite sober crowd.

Last up for the night is Young Livers, a hardcore punk band from Florida in the same vein as Drive Like Jehu and Hoover. Being from the same label as Hot Water Music, it is easy to say that they are similar, but the strong vocals of singer Matt Farrell and driving guitars move them into their own lane. The energy is still going full power, complete with veins sticking out of necks and red faces. You know their serious when they look like a hernia is setting in.



Although the band are fairly new and only have the one full release titled 'The New Drop Era' (plus a couple of 7" Splits with 'Attack! Vipers!' and 'Bridge and Tunnel'), time previously spent in the bands Glass & Ashes, The Horror and Fiya have secured a tight sound for the foursome, and the duelling guitars give their sound multiple layers. All in all the bands tonight have woken me and others up now, and given a Sunday night in Leeds a much needed punk boost.
