However to be a good performer, you usually require more than a good vocal ability and so this would be interesting to see if she can deliver the goods when it comes to a live show.
Support came via Har Mar Superstar who could easily have sold out the Rescue Rooms on his own merits, but instead seemed happy to play second fiddle to a relatively new artiste. Har Mar Superstar impressed the crowd and certainly set the benchmark rather high for Sia to beat.
As the lights faded to black in preparation for the arrival of Sia and her entourage, the theme tune from Rocky was belted out of the P.A system as the introduction music for Sia. This certainly kicked the audience into life, with the blokes doing the obligatory air punching along to the theme tune.
Sia and her band arrived on stage wearing day-glo stick men outfits, which made an impression; as I cant remember the last time I ever saw a band arrive on stage wearing that type of costume. It had more impact than normal due to the fact that the Australian-born signer is best known for her down-beat tracks and so you would never in a million years expect her to come out in a stage costume like that.
However after seeing Har Mar Superstar jumping around after stripping down to his underwear made Sia's entrance seem pretty ordinary.
Looking around the room, there was definitely a huge age range, ranging from 18 year olds to late 50's. There was also a very friendly atmosphere with fans blowing bubbles throughout the set, how often does that happen???
Sia flyers and posters advertising her live recording of that night's show and her forthcoming material dominated the room.
Admittedly it would have been difficult for her to do a full set without including at least one track from her Zero 7 days, and so dutifully she performed 'Destiny' which sent the crowd wild.
The set was heavily dominated by tracks from her latest album 'Some People Have Real Problems'. Songs such as 'Death By Chocolate' and 'You Have Been Loved' were all well received by the crowd.
Sia even included her breakthrough single 'Breathe Me', which seemed to get the biggest response of the night.
All of the songs were vocally impressive, but its not only the vocals that make it worth seeing Sia live, she seems to come across on stage as being fun, humorous, excited to be on stage and most of all rather genuine about being on stage and not taking it for granted. She quickly builds an unbreakable rapport with the audience by reeling of anecdotes about songs and things that she has been upto.
I hope that she never loses that charismatic charm to create an atmosphere amongst the audience where everyone feels as if it's their own personal show. Something, which will probably be lost in bigger venues which Sia, looks sure to be playing in the near future.
