Bowling For Soup / Bloodhound Gang / Zebrahead / Army Of Freshmen

Rock City, Nottingham on Thu 18th Oct 2007

Bowling for Soup returned to Rock City as part of their Get Happy tour. Which included a stunning list of support bands; Zebrahead, Army Of Freshmen, and Bloodhound Gang, which are all bands that are capable of pulling a big crowd on their own, so to have all of them on the same bill was nothing short of incredible.

Just to quickly mention the support bands, Zebrahead and Army of Freshmen, were more than able to entertain the younger people in the audience. They were both stereotypical rock bands for teenagers, with all the typical sing-a-long melodic songs that have become the norm for those type of bands, and I’m sure if I was a few years younger I may have enjoyed them a lot more. However they just weren’t my sort of thing.

The Bloodhound Gang on the other hand are always good to see live, their stage show is never dull, full of surprises throughout the set, some good, some stomach churning, but at least they entertain.

This time around their show included a certain band member balancing a pitcher of beer on his penis. As well as the band taking the piss out of our smoking ban they decided to all walk off stage and have a five minute cigarette break whilst showing footage of adverts (cigarette based obviously). Then there was the usual ripping off clothes and spitting at each other. As well as their music being lyrically quite witty.

Bowling for Soup

By the time Bowling For Soup arrived on stage, the place was hotter than a blazing inferno, so many bodies crammed into one venue, just by looking at how little room to manoeuvre there was it was easy to see that once again BFS had managed to sell out Rock City.

Jaret (vocalist) and the rest of the band certainly looked like they were ready to put on a great show, and sure enough that is exactly what they did. All of the crowd pleasers were finely balanced to keep this show full of energy and enticing. Songs such as ‘Punk Rock 101’ and ‘I’m Gay’ not necessarily the most technical of songs but are definitely the most enjoyable tracks to listen to in a live setting.

Bowling for Soup

Their set consisted of a good mixture of songs spanning through most of their albums and naturally included a couple from their current album ‘The Great Burrito Extortion Case’ which were well received by the jam-packed crowd.

This was one of those gigs that was an absolute thriller to see, with great snappy vibrant melodic punk rock tracks that can be enjoyed by a vast range of people.

Critically speaking, the set seemed to be very short, I counted it as just under one hour, but when a show is this enjoyable why should something as trivial as the length be a problem. They played every song that a fan could have possibly wanted and managed to squeeze in some unique interludes in between tracks such as taking time to pose for people with their camera phones and ensure everybody got a good picture.

Say what you like about their songs, but live they are without a doubt in a league of their own.
