sleep loss for Primal Scream singer

news: Thursday 18th January 2007

Known more for his stage antics than for his love of a quiet nights sleep, Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie has been at the front of a residential campaign to stop their local from extending its licensing hours well into the night.

The pub in question is called The Alma, and it's under fire from Gillespie and his band of campaigners who have just written off a letter to the Islington council.

The letter, obtained by The Independent and apparently written by Gillespie, complains about "playing recorded music at an unacceptable volume past 12 o’clock."

Gillespie continued: "There was a live percussionist playing along with the records, the sound was of a very high frequency which reverberated into my bedroom and my children's bedroom.

"I found the repetitiveness disturbing and I was unable to sleep because of it.
"

It seems ironic coming from the singer, but he has complained that the pub is "disturbing the peace of our beautiful street and attracting noisy, drunk people to our area, leaving the premises or coming into the area for a late night drink who are incidentally just (as loud) if not louder than the music being played."

Islington Borough Council have decided to restrict the late opening hours of the pub to once a month. Good news for father of two Gillespie, who will now be able to get some peace and quiet.
