Frank Sidebottom

The Boardwalk, Sheffield on Mon 18th Dec 2006

The suspected love child of a porcelain doll and a rugby ball, Frank Sidebottom is back, making kidults over the UK laugh at his family-friendly jokes and humorous takes on well known pop songs. First up the vision from many Saturday morning TV programs appears in his suit and pink tie, and plays a few tunes using a pre-programmed keyboard, the content involving topics such as Paul Macartney and his website www.franksworld.co.uk (they are the lyrics; very clever, to make you remember).

After a slide show of famous people he has met (including Mrs Merton and The Beatles (“That’s not PhotoShop!”) its time for Little Frank, the mini-me with no constant body (we are told he is a rod puppet). His cardboard suited body is raffled off in the second half to one lucky punter, who after stating is unemployed, is told by Frank that the body will go for eight pounds on Ebay. Little Frank spends a lot of the set stuck on top of the microphone stand, until he is given a “heavy mattel” cardboard body.

There is a lot of singing along from the crowd; one guy in particular is called upon to sing a chorus on his own and does very well, even with the nonsense lyrics.

For the second half the nasally-spoken one reappears in a Santa suit and proceeds to show more slides of good fancy dress costumes, stressing he is not one for fancy dress. They are mainly based on Thunderbirds and Star Trek characters; pencil drawings of Frank and Little Frank in costumes. Then there’s the best pets to get for Christmas Day (and a bit of Boxing Day), including an ant, a stick insect and a yeti (with an amusing picture of a shaved yeti).

Finally the Santa suit is shifted to reveal the pink tie and the infamous Altrincham footy kit, prompting many football chants and Frank’s song for Aberdeen (“Have you seen, Aberdeen?”). Not as good as ping-pong version of the classic-
Frank: “Who’s been on Match Of The Day?”
Crowd: “You have, in your big shorts!”

The guy is very funny and the crowd are in hysterics and get very involved with the singing and theatre-style chanting of “Oh no you’re not”. Great nostalgic fun, and not a bit rude.
