Idlewild

Dundee Fat Sams on Tue 28th Nov 2006

There are not many comparisons you can make between Pete Doherty and Roddy Woomble – the former graces the pages of the hallowed halls of Indie (the NME) and creates mass hysteria from the Daily Mail et al, the latter is a genre-crossing, long haired folk-rock poet originally from nearby Carnoustie. However, considering that only Babyshambles managed to sell out Fat Sams quite so quickly in recent years goes some way to highlight the mass cult appeal of the Scottish five-piece.

"They might be a different band from the days of Bob Fairfoull on bass, but Idlewild are going some way to prove that they’re still as essential as ever before."
Previewing upcoming LP ‘Make Another World’, the band fills the small stage, opening up with the new very limited 7” release ‘If It Takes You’, and then straight into two of their biggest songs: ‘Roseability’ and ‘When I Argue I See Shapes’. Make no mistake – Idlewild seem to be through their folk phase, they are back and they are rocking, as a matter of fact, only three songs of the set are taken from ‘Warnings/Promises’, arguably their weakest album to date.

Of the five new songs previewed tonight, ‘A Ghost in the Arcade’ sounds the most promising and a potential single, and the only song that falters is the title track from the upcoming album, which drags on a little with no real direction.

The band treat the packed 480 capacity Fat Sams to some older and rarer material, such as ‘Satan Polaroid’ from the Captain EP and ‘The Quiet Crown’ from the seminal album ‘100 Broken Windows’, and it sounds as good as ever, where the band still have most of the energy from the older days, they have a new found musicianship that does songs like ‘I’m A Message’ the justice it deserves, although Roddy Woomble does look a little uncomfortable on such a small stage, though all is forgiven during the anarchic ‘A Modern Way of Letting Go’, and with such a good crowd, it doesn’t really matter too much.

They might be a different band from the days of Bob Fairfoull on bass, but Idlewild are going some way to prove that they’re still as essential as ever before.
