After queuing for the car park for the best part of an hour, it was obvious that Rock City would be rammed full to capacity. Trying to get to the bar inside Rock City was nothing short of nightmarish.
The Killers arrived on stage promptly to a volcanic cheer from the awaiting fans, who were happy just to be in the presence of their idols.
Musically The Killers were tighter than a ducks arse, and so they get top marks for musical ability, however when I go to a show I like to see a little bit of effort, and this is where the gig was lacking.
Frontman Brandon Flowers just didnt seem to be trying to engage the audience at all, it was almost as if they were playing Rock City for just for the Herculean pay packet that I no doubt would be making its way into their accounts. They just didnt have that sparkle that they normally have when they play live.
There is no denying that The Killers melodic hooks, and sing-a-long choruses along with the synthesised beats create a killer sound (pun intended). As expected all of their big anthems such as Somebody Told Me. Smile Like You Mean It and Mr. Brightside were enjoyable and the adoring fans lapped up every minute of the set.
For me this was the worst performance Ive seen by the Killers (who are usually exceptionally great), bizarrely though the fact that wherever you were in the venue you were able to see the whites of their eyes was a privilege that most of us will never get to have again, due to them being such a big act now days they will probably never ever play such a small venue again and so regardless of their lack of sparkle, this will be one of those memorable gigs and in years to come, dare I say it...this will be looked back on like the David Bowie, Ozzy Osbourne and Guns N Roses gigs that took place at this small but great venue.
An absolutely memorable gig. Even the people that had paid £160 per ticket left smiling like they meant it!!!
