Several supports were lined up for the show, none of them feigning any sort of significant crowd interest. The band The Early Years managed to kill the buzzed up aura of the crowd with their hardcore guitar strumming and drowned out vocals. I actually heard shouts of Youre boring! being cried out around me, something I have rarely experienced.
Shiny Toy Guns started late. However, once on stage this was a fact easily forgotten as vocalists Carah Faye and Chad Petree took up their microphones and instruments and rolled into the set with professionalism and sophistication. After a long flight from Los Angeles the band seemed relieved to have such a thriving and semi-drunk crowd on their hands, ready to rock n roll to the electro beats.
Indie-electro is a hot genre to be involved with right now, and Shiny Toy Guns have hit the hammer right on the nail. Their songs dont become too confusing but individually are versatile enough to avoid monotony. Faye and Petrees vocals are a little rougher live, but they harmonise well and both posses powerful stage presence and evidently love what they do. Current hits included the fast tempo You are the one, Dont cry out, Le Disko (which sounds exceedingly like a less ballsy Peaches track) and Starts with One. And for the more mellow fan, there are the slower, prettier tracks such as The weather girl showing that they wont be pigeon holed as an up tempo electro band.
Again, here is a band with something non mainstream to offer. If you want a good dance and something you can work yourself up in a frenzy over, then Shiny Toy Guns are the band for you. Dont go and see them if youre expecting musical perfection. You wont get it.
