Indigo Colony / The High Rise Diaries

The Cooperage, Newcastle upon Tyne on Tue 15th Aug 2006

The north east is starting to develop a bit of a scene at the moment. Maximo Park and The Futureheads are clearly leading the charge, but there are a great number of bands waiting in the wings, just anticipating their moment. Two of those bands are on display tonight, and on this showing the future is very bright indeed.

Support act The High Rise Diaries are immense. In turns they remind me of Bloc Party, Placebo, and REM, but they manage to do it without sounding derivative and cliched. Each perfectly formed pop punk gem is followed by another, and by the end of the set, no one would have felt short changed if they had been the headline act.

Indigo Colony, however, are something else entirely. Having first seen them at Newcastle's Evolution Festival, I had a good idea of what to expect - melodic, angst ridden indie rock aimed squarely at anyone who has their heart permanently sewn onto their sleeve. What did shock me was that this band, since that first time, have actually somehow managed to improve on what was a very high quality set.

Indigo Colony

Despite being pretty much unknown, songs such as 'Holes', 'Quattro', and the upcoming single 'Even A Little' go to show that this band could already be the finished product. Vocalist Rob delivers each song with such true emotion that you can't help but get sucked in, whilst the rest of the band create an incredibly tight, professional backing, the likes of which is rarely seen in venues such as this, by bands so new.

It surely can't be long before Indigo Colony are headlining much bigger venues than this, and they will bring the house down. See them before they become massive, you won't regret it.
