Last time Gemma came to Nottingham was to play at the Social, this time around she played a bigger venue- the Rescue Rooms. She must be doing something right as the venue was bustling with people waiting in anticipation for her to take to the stage.
Gemma and her backing band casually strolled onto the stage, and picked up their instruments to a friendly cheer from the audience. This was one of those gigs where the artiste didnt need any gimmicks, or fancy lighting effects to impress the audience - just the band and their instruments were enough to keep the audience entertained.
Another One For The Darkness was the opening song, which got a mild reaction from the crowd- possibly because they still hadnt brought the second album yet? The next track Happy Sad was also taken from her second album, but by this point the crowd seem to be slowly getting into the swing of things.
At which point Gemma kindly played Hanging Around from her debut album Night On My Side- at which point there were actually signs of life in the audience. That is not to say that this performance was not entertaining, the audience just seemed to be very withdrawn.
The setlist was well-balanced - and in no time at all Gemma had ploughed her way through Undercover, Easy On The Eye, In Over Your Head, Back Of My Hand, Lucky One, Two Step, Nothing Can.
Gemma Hayes is great to see live, if you genuinely appreciate decent music then this is the ideal gig for you, no gimmicks, just great music!
Fingers crossed that she doesnt wait another four years before returning!!!
