Motley Crue

Birmingham NEC on Fri 17th Jun 2005

Those wild boys of rock - Motley Crue - demonstrated in spectacular style that they were back and ready to rock even bigger and better than before. The stage was designed in the shape of a circus big top - red and white stripes - possibly to coincide with the name of their latest album, Red, White and Crue.

There was a crate centre stage which had a freaky clown emerge from it, and then two scantily clad female dancers elevated from this crate. After some posing and strolling around the stage gently rubbing up against each other and almost kissing they opened the crate one more time to reveal vocalist Vince Neil.

The crowd went wild at the site of one of their rock gods, and as soon as the music kicked in and the big top opened up to reveal the rest of the band - the entire venue erupted with a volcanic round of a applause.

The audience mainly consisted of middle-aged rockers, the females dressed in short leather skirts and low cut tops, whilst the males wore the traditional denim jeans and Motley Crue emblazoned t-shirt.

During their opening song 'Shout At The Devil' all of the stereotypical rock clichés were used - Pyro, loud explosions, pretty flames, smoke, gigantic stadium lighting effects. Admittedly it was obvious that Motley Crue were going to have to pull out every trick in the book to keep their fans happy, but it just seemed that they gave their fans too much too quickly and by the third track '10 Seconds To Love' it was beginning to get tiresome and irritating.

Technically Motley Crue's individual band members aren't the worlds greatest set of musicians. OK, Tommy Lee is probably one of the best rock drummers around - up there with Lars Ulrich from Metallica. But apart from Tommy, individually they are just above average, but as a whole band they are absolutely incredible.

Motley Crue

At this point in the show I was amazed that about ten minutes had gone and Tommy Lee (Drummer) and Vince Neil (vocalist) had been in the same vicinity without so much as one punch - incredible considering that it wasn't that long ago that they couldn't even bare to be in the same room as each other.

Motley Crue's set list included all of the favourite crowd pleasers - and yes they did 'Girls, Girls, Girls' with some interesting movements from the two female dancers. I won't spoil the surprise for those of you who have not seen this band yet!

Tommy Lee then used his 'titty-cam' to get some of the females in the audience to get their tops off and flash their breasts, which again went on way too long and I personally would have sooner seen the band fit in a couple of extra tracks rather than waste time getting women to do that. Let's be honest, I'm sure Tommy Lee would have no problem getting women to do that and a whole lot more whilst he is off stage!

For those of you who like your 'real' rock bands that have lived a little and have lived life to excess, then look no further than Motley Crue - if they do decide to tour again (cough, next year, cough) then they really must tone down the opening part of their show so that the explosions etc don't become boring - sometimes less is more!!

That aside, Motley Crue are one of those rare handful of bands that have mastered the art of playing live and after seeing them just once it is easy to see why they are regarded as one of the best live bands around! They certainly put everything they have into making this a memorable show! An all time classic show by one of the few genuine legendary rock bands!

Can't wait to see them again...
