Mix Master Mike took to centre stage to start proceedings with a fine example of what skills he has to pay the bills; scratching and mixing his records like a vinyl plate spinner. After his intro the rest of the guys hit the stage in matching blue Adidas tracksuits that Goldie Lookin Chain would have been proud to wear.
Kicking off with 'Root Down' the pit rippled into an excited frenzy, 'Triple Trouble' - off new album 'To the 5 Boroughs'- was followed by 'Sure Shot' and 'Super Disco Breakin'. In between the Beasties taking breath the giant screens entertained the crowd with odd comedy sketches.
'Money Makin' and 'Skills to Pay the Bills' finished off the first section before letting Mike amaze the crowd with another mixing master class. Then the DJ booth was reversed and Adrock, Mike D and MCA - with instruments - were wheeled in on a float. Clad in cheesy blue lounge suits they performed 'Sabrosa', 'Ricky's Theme' and 'Something's Go To Give'.
During another stage change the video screens played pre-recorded requests from Stella fuelled members of the audience before the Boys came back with 'An Open Letter to NYC'. Dressed in bright orange t-shirts, requests were fulfilled with 'Body Movin', '3 MCs and 1DJ', 'Brass Monkey', 'Ch-Check It Out' and 'So Watcha Want'. If you were watching the stage for 'Intergalactic' you were missing out, the Beasties were in the middle of the arena on the sound stage. Back on stage they did 'Gratitude' and, saving the best for last, they ended with a rocking version of 'Sabotage'.
The Beasties performance, although professional, still had an impromptu feel. They talked to the audience, slated George Bush and when they said it was the last song, it was. No five minutes of clapping and stamping to get them back on for a pre-arranged encore, just the end to a really great concert.
