P J Harvey

Rock City, Nottingham on Wed 8th Sep 2004

PJ Harvey has always had a brilliant reputation for playing live, but until tonight I'd never seen her.

As the houselights faded to black- Polly and her entourage delicately walked onto the stage amidst a deafening cheer from the packed out venue. Despite the large crowd, Miss Harvey has got an uncanny ability to make the performance feel very intimate and at times you genuinely think that she is singing just for you.

The opening track ‘The Life And Death of Mr. Badmouth’ was taken from her current album ‘Uh-Huh-Her’, at which point that dreaded feeling that she was probably going to just do the new material was beginning to slowly creep over me.

Thankfully she played some of her older material like ‘Big Exit’ and ‘Down By The Water’ which is still a crowd favourite.

PJ Harvey’s vocals are crystal clear and so powerful that to watch her in motion is an absolute pleasure, on top of that she is an extremely sexy singer and so not only is she pleasurable to the ears but she is also visually stunning.

One criticism about her live performance is that she had very little interaction with the audience. Maybe it’s just me, but when I go and see a band live it's because I want it to be slightly different from the cd otherwise to me there is no point in seeing a live performance.

If you want to hear fantastic music played superbly with a stunning vocalist then catch PJ Harvey live, as she will certainly impress you.
