DJ Yoda; he's always on the ball. The scratch and paste genius is in Sheffield tonight to splice up the hit Netflix show 'Stranger Things' in his unique way. It's a case of “Why didn't I think of that!” Well for one we ain't all DJs and 2) he's an expert in the DJ/VJ field. The possibilities here are endless though, all that 80s shizz to utilize…
The very dimly lit stage has a poster from Winona Ryder's house in the show replacing "RUN" with "DJ YODA" and on top of this near his decks he hangs fairy lights; a simple but nice touch. The show starts with mixing of some of the shows soundtrack. There's a huge roar for scratching of Milly 'Eleven' Brown's rapping on Jimmy Fallon, showing the fans appreciation for this already iconic child actor.
The mix is available online, but is changed and extended tonight to include hits such as Dexy's Midnight Runners 'Come on Eileen' and Talking Head's 'Burning Down The House'. I would say half the people here were not born in the 80's, and many were born just before it. Some have really put the effort in and dressed like tutued Madonna for the occasion. They love 'Electric Dreams'!
There are clips from the VJ helping DJ Yoda featuring relevant productions like 'On The Buses' and 'The Two Ronnies'. There's real nostalgic flashbacks with adverts form Pearls Soap, Ajax cleaner, Martini, Quality Streets, Sugarpuffs and of course Smash mash. To top it all off there's snippets of great films like 'Close Encounters of The Third Kind' and 'Flight of The Navigator'.
The scratching of Winona Ryder's madnees, Finn Wolfhard's save from the jump off a cliff and the sheriff David Harbour punching the security raise laugh cheers. 'Hey Mickey' by Toni Basil and Michael Sembello's 'She's A Maniac' are great additions to the mix. The Clash and Cyndi Lauper are so good they get two tracks in the mix, although one of Lauper's is a cover. Another over in the way of Echo And The Bunnymen's 'People Are Strange' can be forgiven as it's from the 'Lost Boys' soundtrack.
Yoda has been clever here and chosen songs to coincide with storylines in the show. Love songs for the cute romances between the Wheelers and El and Jonathan, and my favourite October tune Rockwell's 'Somebody's Watching Me' for the Sheriff's frantic de-bugging of his home. 'Weird Science' by Oingo Boingo is an all time classic for me and very welcome in this mix to soundtrack the strange happenings.
The only problem with these clips are you start to watch them and become transfixed! It's another clever output from Yoda keeping on top of the game, and a great mix for children of the shoulder-padded era and beyond.
