Kid Carpet And The Noisy Animals

West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds on Tue 30th Oct 2012

It's 2pm on a Tuesday afternoon and I'm using my lunch break to go and watch Kid Carpet's latest touring show. For kids. I feel a little out of place without one as the show is aimed at very young children so they sit amongst parents dotted about in the crowd. They are a lively bunch but the majority sit intently watching Mr Carpet as he takes them on a journey in his own lively style.

The show starts with KC pretending to be a health and safety inspector, and showing us how to show appreciation, by clapping, giving the horns, playing air guitar and shouting "whey!" and "woo!" He then disappears to the side and comes back on immediately as the Kid Carpet we all know.

From then on it's the tale of a gorilla, badger, bear and hedgehog and how they are travelling to a dance contest which KC and his band are playing at. There are live video feeds from cardboard boxes on stage with cute little sets (the microphone stands made out of matchsticks are sweet) and a busy road fashioned onto a turntable. The animations that pop up are superb; eye catching and funny.

And of course it wouldn't be a Kid Carpet show without his low fi beat heavy tunes. And that Casio keyboard! Again the songs are catchy, the kids and parents are both joining in singing and even me as a loner tries to join in.

It's high energy fun for 55 minute from a guy who will always by young at heart. I can tell the parents especially like the ending where he packs away the toysÂ… teach the kids young! Highly recommended for young and old alike.
